How to install mods on The Witcher 3

A character in the woods

  • Download the Community Patch. You need to move it to the root folder of the game, replacing the files. By default, it is located in the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Witcher 3.
  • Download the Mod Limit fix. Move it to the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Witcher 3\binx64. Run the modlimitpatcher.exe file.
  • Install The Witcher 3 Mod Manager. Run it and point to the game’s root folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Witcher 3.
  • Install Script Manager. You also need to run it and specify the folder with the game.

If you have installed all the tools, you will be able not only to run mods with the manager, but also to eliminate possible conflicts between them. To do this, run the Script Manager and check the modifications for compatibility using the Refresh function. If they cannot work at the same time – choose the mod that is more important to you.

Due to the peculiarities of the file system, Wither 3: Hild Hunt does not require any additional software to install mods. Of course, you can use Nexus Mod Manager, but it does not support all mods for The Witcher. The method described below is suitable for installing any modification of this game.

You will need any archiver – for example, 7 zip or WinRar. Most of the mods you will be downloading in archives that will need to be unpacked. At the time of writing this guide the current version of “The Witcher 3” is 1.31. Make sure that your downloaded modification is suitable for this version (or the one installed on your computer).

In the root folder of the game you need to create the Mods directory. For example, the path may look like this: E:\Games\The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt\Mods. Here you will need to copy or move the folder from the archive with the mod.

After installing it, it may take a few minutes before the game starts – the game engine will process the scripts contained there and install the new components.

That’s all! No additional manipulation is not necessary. As you can see, this method is one of the easiest and does not require deep knowledge in computer technology.

Installing a mod manually

  • To install a mod for The Witcher 3 manually, first download it from the Nexus Mods website. This is usually a Zip file. Unzip the files into the same folder.
  • Now find the location where you installed the game. Usually, if you downloaded the game from Steam, you can find it in C:Program Files (x86) -> Steam -> steamapps -> common ->The Witcher 3.
  • Now create a new folder and name it mods.
  • Copy the downloaded mod and place it in the folder you created in the previous step.

Voila! Your mod should now work.

But installing mods is a tricky business. Some mods don’t work with other mods and are therefore incompatible. Sometimes this conflict can be resolved by loading mods in a certain order, known as load order. Therefore, it is recommended to use the Nexus Mod Manager to install mods. It will notify you if mods conflict, and if there is a certain loading order that can resolve the conflict, it will also notify you.

Malfunctions and their fixes
